Practical Household Prints: Caps, Trackers and Storage
Not every popular print is a toy. Some of the most useful recent uploads solve small household problems: a cap that stops a half-used sealant cartridge from curing, a magnetic switch board for tracking chores, brackets that turn boards into shelves and a lidded Gridfinity box. For each one we link to the designer's original page and note the license, the hardware you may need and what to measure first. Licenses vary from strict personal use to Creative Commons non-commercial terms, so read them before printing for anyone else. We do not quote popularity figures.

Silicone Cartridge Cap
A screw-on cap that seals a partly used silicone or sealant cartridge so the rest does not cure in the nozzle. It is designed for the common S15 × 2.5 cartridge thread and prints without supports. Before printing, check that your cartridges really use that thread; then print one and test the fit before making a batch. PETG is a sensible choice for a part that meets solvents and gets screwed on and off repeatedly. Useful for DIYers, renovators and maintenance staff. Personal, non-commercial use only.

Magnetic Toggle Switch Chore Tracker
A fridge-mounted box of toggle switches for tracking repeating tasks such as feeding a pet, watering plants or taking medication. It comes in one-, three- and seven-toggle cases with two- or three-position switches, and the multi-toggle versions add a reset lever. You will need small 20 × 6 × 2 mm magnets, and the CAD source is included, so you can change the number of switches. Print a single switch first to check that it clicks cleanly before committing to the seven-toggle case. Handy for families and shared flats. Remixes must keep the same non-commercial license.

Modular Stackable Shelf Brackets – 3D Printed
Open-lattice brackets that turn plain wooden boards into a small shelving unit, with levels that stack vertically. The printed parts carry the load, so think about what goes on the shelf: use more walls and a strong material such as PETG for heavy items like filament spools, and measure your board thickness before printing a full set. Suits workshops, desks and hobby rooms. The author link goes to GentleDesign's MakerWorld profile. The license does not allow modified versions to be shared, and commercial use is not allowed.

Gridfinity Storage Box | Open Source
A portable, lidded box built on the Gridfinity grid, offered in two heights that share one latching lid and stackable feet. Battery inserts for common cells are included, and any standard Gridfinity bin fits inside. Assembly needs a few M3 × 25 mm screws and M3 nuts, so check your hardware first. STEP files are supplied, which makes it easy to adapt. Good for electronics hobbyists and anyone already using Gridfinity on their bench. The author link goes to KRENN DESIGN's Printables profile.

Questions before you choose
- Which filament should I use for functional household parts?
- PLA is fine for light-duty organisers and trackers. For parts that carry weight, meet chemicals or get screwed on and off repeatedly, such as shelf brackets or a sealant cap, PETG is usually the safer choice. Add walls rather than infill for strength.
- What should I measure before printing these?
- Check the thread on your sealant cartridges (the cap targets S15 × 2.5), the thickness of your shelf boards, the magnet size for the chore tracker and the screws and nuts for the Gridfinity box. A single test print saves filament.
- My part is broken and I cannot find a matching model. What now?
- Take a clear photo with a ruler beside the part and upload it to PrintWhat search to find similar models. If nothing fits, write a design brief with the measurements and request a custom 3D model.
- Can I remix or sell these designs?
- It depends on each license. The chore tracker allows non-commercial remixes under the same license, the shelf brackets do not allow sharing modified versions, and the sealant cap is personal use only. None of these allows commercial use.
